RESEARCH INTERESTS of the Stock lab.
- Immunochemistry of venoms of mostly African snakes of medical importance, particularly elapids from the genera Naja (cobras) and Dendroaspis (mambas). We are interested in determining the minimum number of venoms of a given genus necessary to produce antivenoms with a maximum spectrum of therapeutic usefulness.
- Cell biology of the parasite Entamoeba histolytica. We are interested in determining the factors that impinge on the cytolytic capacity of this common human intestinal pathogen. Our strategy has mostly relied on gene targetting and suppression by peptide nucleic acids and microscopic observation of sub-cellular compartments involved in protein trafficking.
- Identification of antimicrobial agents in the venom of several species of snake.
- Characterization of the biophysics of the action of sphingomyelinase D from several species of spiders of genus Loxosceles by, mostly, biophotonic and calorimetric approaches on model membranes.
- Generation of recombinant active α-latrotoxins from different species of black widow spiders (genus Latrodectus).
